The Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation (Park Board) is seeking a dynamic park professional for the position of Supervisor of Stanley Park and Sanitation Services. Stanley Park is 400 hectares (1,000 acres) in size and attracts approximately 7 million visitations per year. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in managing important public green spaces and share the values of integrity, responsiveness, learning, leadership, inclusiveness and accountability.

Reporting to the Director of the Stanley District, the Supervisor will provide strategic leadership, sound financial and human resource management and direct the development and day-to-day operations of Stanley Park and city-wide sanitation services. The supervisor will be responsible for approximately 50 regular full time staff as well as a compliment of auxiliary and seasonal staff while nurturing relationships with internal and external customers.

Qualifications:

You are energetic, positive and self-motivated with the highest level of personal and professional integrity. You have a related university degree, or an equivalent combination of training and experience plus a minimum of 10 years progressively responsible management experience in park operations with exposure to the various facets of horticultural, business, financial and human resource management. You have experience in developing and implementing leading edge strategic planning and service delivery; as well as extensive experience in advocating on behalf of others and working with volunteer partner organizations. Additionally, you have successful experience managing in a unionized environment, have outstanding leadership skills and political savvy, are well organized and able to communicate and negotiate at all levels; you also have experience utilizing a variety of contemporary information technology resources and management information systems.

Salary Range:

Compensation for this exempt position includes an annual salary of $79,561 to $99,451 plus an excellent benefit and vacation package as well as an earned-days-off system.

Park Technician - City of Surrey
Under the general supervision of a Park Operations Coordinator or Section Manager Parks Operations North, the Park Technician’s key responsibilities include the development of comprehensive, asset-based management plans and prescriptions for an assigned group of parkland and public building grounds; which includes annual work plans, administration of contracts and projects within existing budgets.

The successful applicant will undertake and supervise all fieldwork related to a full spectrum of horticulture and grounds maintenance activities. Performs related duties and responsibilities in accordance with the requirements of the class specification.

  • Completion of a diploma or degree program in a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution, with a minimum of three years related experience, or
  • Completion of Grade 12 supplemented by a Trades qualification and four years of related progressive experience, or
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a Technical Certificate Program (one year full-time) in a related field from a recognized post-secondary institution, with additional related academic courses and training including at least one credit course in each of supervision and technical writing, supplemented by five years of related progressive experience, or
  • Completion of Grade 12 and a Citation Program (two years minimum part-time studies) from a recognized post-secondary institution in a related field, with additional related academic courses and training including at least one credit course in each of supervision and technical writing, supplemented by six years of related progressive experience.

The individual must possess superior public relation and interpersonal skills including dealing with others in stressful situations. Garden Director - Park & Tilford Shops & Garden
The Garden Director will report to the Property Manager and oversee and manage the 3 acre botanical gardens which are located at the Park & Tilford Shopping Centre in an efficient and effective manner, in accordance with the agreements with the City.  The Garden Director will maintain the facility as a high quality asset of the Shopping Centre and a prominent feature in the community.

Responsibilities:

Budget Control

  • Prepare yearly budget figures for all plant related activities of Park & Tilford Gardens
  • Monitor inventory, place orders and code equipment and materials.

Garden Management

  • Coordinate and schedule all garden tasks such as:
    • Design of new landscape installations in the Gardens and the Shopping Centre landscape with annual incremental improvement
    • Design on 2 major displays a year (Spring bulbs and summer bedding)
    • Purchasing and/or planning and growing of high quality plants for garden display including Greenhouse culture and production schedules, Irrigation, fertilization schedules,
    • Weed, pest and disease control schedules
    • Transplanting, pruning and propagation schedules
    • Planning and scheduling of major repairs regarding irrigation, roof and brickwork
    • Quality control and adherence to standards.

Management of Capilano College Agreement

  • Liaise with teaching staff regarding policies, schedule of activities and training procedures
  • Organize materials, equipment and tasks for training and work sessions
  • Teach, monitor and grade practical skills of the students annually

Staff Management

  • Supervision of two  full-time Garden staff and temporary summer students from May to September which includes:
    • Hiring and termination of staff and maintaining  staff relations
    • Process timesheets, student grant applications, schedule work shifts and supervise training for new staff
    • Supervise Capilano College practicum students from October to April on a rotating basis

Liaison with Contractors

  • Coordinate with contractors for structural, electrical and plumbing repairs and installations, and signage
  • Review quotes, monitor job quality and consequent plant damage, and holdbacks for incomplete work
  • Perform minor repairs as needed

Garden Tasks

  • Perform specialized functions such as Asian pruning, design of  patio planters, mulching, propagation, weekend watering, etc.
  • Assist during major projects and staff shortage

Christmas Lighting

  • Supervise lighting contractor to ensure prompt and timely installation
  • Ensure that the project is within budget requirements
  • Conduct regular inspections for quality control
  • Ensure minimal damage to fragile garden environment
  • Order and code new equipment
  • Manage any new tender process

Public Relations

  • Organize lectures, tours, trade meetings and slide shows
  • Prepare write-ups and articles for newspapers, magazines, brochures and television
  • Ensure verbal and written advice is given to the public regarding horticulture and gardens policy
  • Liaise with North Vancouver City Gardens Review Board and Parks Superintendent
  • Coordinate plant exchange with horticultural organizations
  • Other duties as required from time-to-time by the Property Manager that are within the scope of knowledge required for the Garden Director

Qualifications

  • 5 years experience in similar role, in a fast-paced environment an asset
  • High school diploma supplemented with horticultural education and certification plus ongoing educational upgrading
  • Horticulturist and Landscape Design an asset
  • Relationship Skills - Strong oral and written communication skills; ability to develop and sustain cooperative working relationships with customers and employees of all levels; able to work with a variety of personalities; team player; pleasant and professional; strong customer service skills
  • Organizational/Multi-Task Skills - Ability to allocate one's time effectively, work under pressure and manage tight deadlines; ability to handle multiple demands and competing priorities, and adapt to new ideas and constant changes; detail oriented and accurate
  • Computer Skills – Basic to intermediate skills in Excel and Word, good typing skills (50 wpm), knowledge of JD Edwards an asset
