BC Landscape Award of Excellence Winners 2009

Unique or Special Feature
Pacifica Landscape Works

This piece of streetscape was overgrown, and had zero curb appeal. The solution was to create a series of walls and translucent screens that provide a backdrop for striking architectural foliage, and come alive at night with unique silhouettes.

Small Space Garden

The ambience of a high end rooftop lounge fills this patio space. Custom designed and pre-constructed for light weight, all materials were craned into place. A glowing bar creates a central gathering point; a fire pit cut into the surface of the deck provides warmth and leads your eyes out toward spectacular views.

Landscape Maintenance - Single Family Residential
SoundGarden Landscape and Design Ltd. |

This one-acre property is located in the beautiful Pemberton Valley facing Mount Currie. Landscape debris is re-used: leaves are mulched and incorporated into soils; branches are chipped for compost when possible. Only organic based fertilizers are used and when the lawn stresses they dig out weeds as they arise. Natural horsetail area on one side of the property creeps into the beds from time to time, but SoundGarden has learned to embrace it in one area and cultivate it into the soil in another.

Landscape Installation - Single Family Residential
Kroll Construction

This L-shaped backyard presented numerous design challenges, being dominated by a two-car garage and surrounding houses on higher ground. A representational creek-bed was constructed with feather-rock. With trees for privacy, and central plantings representative of running water and marginal aquatics, this strong, idealized feature offsets the dominance of the garage. Designed by Geoff Woods.

An uncompromising respect for the natural mountain terrain, native grasses and pine trees underscores the landscaping for this residential property in Kamloops. Inspired by their passion for golf, the clients engaged the design team to create a resort-style landscape. As part of its commitment to high landscape standards and environmental sustainability, the company was able to provide lushness this arid climate by introducing xeriscape techniques, an efficient drip irrigation system, plants suitable to the environment, soil amendments and artificial turf.

Acacia Landscape

This narrow site featured a 12 foot grade change over 50 feet. The property had no direct access, which meant negotiating an easement through the neighbor’s property to facilitate machine and material portability. The setting and architecture of the house have a Mediterranean feel, which directed the design, material choice and colour scheme. The end result has been successful not only from an aesthetic point of view but also from a functional one, offering spaces for small and large gatherings, and magical places for children to explore and play.

A true West Coast resort, this installation assures a gathering of family and friends. A naturalized swimming pool and waterfall, an outdoor kitchen, fire-pit, and a large patio space were incorporated. A dramatic waterfall was designed to cascade down the hill and under a curved viewing bridge before plummeting into the pool below.

About the BC Landscape Awards of Excellence

The BC Landscape Awards of Excellence is coordinated by the BCLNA to recognize and profile the high standard of landscaping excellence in BC. The program began in 1981 as an opportunity for BC landscape professionals to officially showcase their quality landscaping projects in a competition. Today, this opportunity has grown to a rewarding, prominent event exposing landscapers and sponsors to over 200,000 potential customers! This is a great way for landscapers to market their services and skills by showing their clients the passion and pride they take in their work. At the same time, sponsors demonstrate their loyalty to the industry and to their landscape customers.

How to Enter the BC Landscape Awards of Excellence
Plan in advance which landscaping projects you are entering to demonstrate to the judges the effort and expertise it took to complete each transformation.   First, be sure that the projects will be in 'full bloom' around judging time (late August/early September). Occasionally, with a 'young garden' it is better to wait a year to enter. Once you have decided on the projects you want to enter, start taking some 'before' pictures of the sites (always a good visual tool to influence the judge's decisions). Finally, be sure to enter by the deadline (usually the second or last week of August).
